After Two Fatal Crashes, Boeing's 737 MAX is Back in the Air

U.S. Regulators Reinstated the Plane's Flight Certification in November 2020

The Boeing 737 MAX, which was grounded worldwide for 20 months after two fatal crashes, has been cleared to fly again by U.S. regulators.

In March 2019, a Boeing 737 MAX operated by Ethiopian Airlines crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all 157 people on board. Five months earlier, a Lion Air flight operated by the same type of plane crashed in Indonesia, killing 189 people.

Investigations into the crashes found that a faulty flight control system played a role in both accidents. Boeing has since made changes to the system, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved the plane's return to service.

Some airlines have already begun flying the 737 MAX again, and others are expected to follow suit in the coming months. However, some countries, including China, have not yet lifted their bans on the plane.
